Apple released a new phone today that finally steps up to modern smartphone standards (though some features have yet to be confirmed, like MMS). Many Apple fans are simply thrilled but there’s a murmur of dissent in the normally jubilant crowd. The value of the original iPhone will be almost nothing compared to the purchase price come July, even though most iPhone users paid least $399 for their phones new a little less than a year ago, some sooner. I wonder how those who paid $599 for their model feel about that.

It’s not really an issue for me because, personally, the lack of a slide-out keyboard is a dealbreaker. I was just thinking how much happier I would have been as an apple iPhone user if Apple hadn’t just gutted my expensive device’s resale value.  Apple focuses a lot on getting new customers but not much at all on keeping them, usually.  Of course, that’s a proper business model for a company that relies almost entirely on hype and a sort of elitism to keep it going.

I’m not anti-Apple, and I own an iPod myself, but I still fail to see how people can keep buying things like computers from them when most of their products (excluding the most recent iphone, and all ipods to date) are grossly overpriced for their specs and lose value much, much faster than their competitors products.

Personally, I’m still waiting on both the HTC Touch Pro and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1. Now those are nice phones and their value is unlikely to fluctuate as much as those of Apple products.
